AdventHealth’s Board of Directors has elected Ron C. Smith to serve as chair during its most recent quarterly Board meeting. Smith assumes responsibilities immediately, replacing Gary Thurber after he served a two-year term as board chair.

Today, an article without a photo will not often get published. Photos are crucial, but not all photos are good. To address this issue a small group of photographers from three Adventist Church world divisions met September 5-12, 2019, at the Hlíðardalsskóli, a former Adventist boarding school.

Loma Linda University Health physician Laren Tan, M.D., recently began a regional tour to speak with junior high and high school students about the dangers of vaping. Starting with La Sierra Academy in Riverside, California, Tan spoke to students about the dangers of both the substance being vaped and the lesser-known hazards of the activity.

On September 27, more than 600 attendees of the 2019 NAD Women’s Convention participated in a day of community service organized by God in Shoes. Since 2009, the Georgia-Cumberland Conference-based ministry has been the official community service outreach organizer for the convention, which is held every five years. The women had a dozen projects to choose from that met a wide range of Orlando’s societal needs.

More than 1,000 women were given the opportunity to enrich their lives spiritually, mentally, and physically during the “Whole and Holy” 2019 North American Division Women’s Convention. The four-day event, which included general sessions, breakout seminars, and worship services, was held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, September 26-29.

Engagement watches, Saturday night Rook games, vegetarian potlucks, debates on proper construction of the “haystack” — for many Seventh-day Adventists these things are instantly familiar. But do anecdotal experiences constitute a denominational culture, and are cultural practices linked to Adventist K-12 school enrollment in America? A doctoral study by La Sierra University assistant professor of Education Aimee Leukert recently produced intriguing answers to these questions through a mixed-methods approach.

The Ribbon Cutting Celebration for the Andreasen Center for Wellness at Andrews University took place on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 2–3:30 p.m., featuring music by Cardinal Number, remarks from Andrews faculty, staff and students, and comments from Michael Hildebrand, Oronoko Township president.

Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders, community thought leaders, and AdventHealth board members, executives, and team members came together in Maitland, Florida, for AdventHealth’s 29th annual Conference on Mission, a three-day event centering around the organization’s mission of “Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ.”

Throughout the years I’ve heard several myths about pastors. With October (and Pastoral Appreciation Month) getting ready to start, I thought I’d do a little pastoral myth busting.

For four weeks, in an unprecedented event, the Northeastern Conference (NEC) hosted the Abundant Living Evangelistic Series right in the parking lot of the conference headquarters in Jamaica, New York. Led by Oswald Euell, NEC executive secretary, and assisted by Winston Stephenson, NEC assistant to the president for evangelism, as well as pastors from the NEC churches located in and around Queens, the series ran July 14-August 10, 2019. At the conclusion of the series, 105 people were baptized, and a new mission was formed — the City Seventh-day Adventist Mission.
