A series of fires erupted in southern California on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, amid extremely dry and windy weather conditions. As of January 9 the death toll is seven; thousands of homes have been destroyed. The largest blaze, the Pacific Palisades Fire, is now considered the most destructive in Los Angeles City history. This article provides information about what the Southern California Conference is doing to respond immediately to the crisis caused by the fires.

The Board of Trustees of Oakwood University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gina Spivey-Brown, Ph.D., RN, MSA, FAAN, FNAP, FADLN, as the 12th president of Oakwood University. The announcement concludes a comprehensive and prayerful search process. Spivey-Brown will officially assume leadership on July 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. Leslie N. Pollard, who has led the institution for the past 15 years.

Erton C. Köhler was elected to the office of the president of the General Conference (GC) on July 4, 2025, during the 62nd GC Session in St. Louis, Missouri. Köhler’s election marks the beginning of his first term as the spiritual and administrative leader of a worldwide movement that spans more than 200 countries and includes more than 23 million members.

On January 8, 2025, the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church will kick off the world church’s 10 Days of Prayer with a special prayer meeting. The event, which will live stream from the NAD headquarters, begins at 9 p.m. ET.

Sabbath Schools in Seventh-day Adventist churches around the world will see a big change as the Alive in Jesus curriculum launches in January 2025, with the roll out of materials for babies (birth through 12 months) and beginners (1-3 years). The rollout will continue for the next three years for age groups kindergarten and primary (2026), followed by junior and teen (projected for 2027), and youth (projected for 2028).

Ten years ago, after delivering a well-received presentation at the annual American Society of Church History meeting, Michael Campbell, North American Division director of Archives, Statistics, and Research, pitched the idea of a book on Adventism to the head book editor at Oxford University Press. Intrigued by Campbell’s introduction to Adventist scholarship, the editor invited him to submit a proposal. Their conversation was the catalyst for the groundbreaking Oxford Handbook of Seventh-day Adventism, a 39-chapter volume published in 2024 after much prayer and revision.

As the calendar has turned the page from December to January, the light has effectively turned green for Pentecost 2025, a comprehensive, all-hands-on-deck revival and evangelism initiative of the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. One of the tangible goals of Pentecost 2025 is to collectively conduct at least 3,000 proclamation initiatives across the division within the year. A first fruit of this goal is scheduled for March 9–29 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

AdventSource is pleased to announce that Andre McCloud has been named president elect of AdventSource, the official ministry resource center of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists. McCloud will assume leadership following a transition period, bringing with him more than 25 years of experience in ministry, business, and nonprofit leadership.

Update: During a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, September 22, the Christian Record Services, Inc. (CRS) Board of Directors announced a change in leadership plans following Cesar Perozo’s recent appointment as incoming president. Due to unforeseen family circumstances, Perozo has made the difficult decision to withdraw his name from consideration for the presidency.
