4-16-12 Washington Adventist University Wins Mock Trial Against Howard University

TAKOMA PARK, MD (April 16) – Washington Adventist University’s mock trial team won their first event of the year against Howard University April 1. In a spirited competition, held in Morrison Hall Chapel, the team walked away with awards for best attorney to Asara Greaves and best witness to Angelica Carrasco.
The team is coached by alumni Steve Brennwald, a defense attorney in Washington, D.C., and Petra Aaron, who works as the assistant state’s attorney in the Felony Division in Baltimore City.
The Mock Trial team was initiated in 2000 by Dr. Roy Branson, then director of Law and Public Policy. The team is part of the American Mock Association, a nationally recognized governing body for intercollegiate competition. Washington Adventist University is the first and only Adventist Institution to participate in the AMA.
Mock Trial is structured around the course, American Judicial System (PLST 327).  It offers in-depth study of the judicial system while simultaneously allowing students to actually practice the course information. From those who take the class, six students are invited to join the mock trial team for the spring semester.
The team competes next against the University of Maryland.
