7-13-11 Griggs Merger into Andrews Approved by Higher Learning Commission
School of Distance Education Now Formally and Physically at Andrews University

Berrien Springs, Mich.— Andrews University has received some very positive news from the Higher Learning Commission. At its June 23, 2011 meeting of the Higher Learning Commission Board of Trustees, the board approved the merger of Griggs University into Andrews University. The Higher Learning Commission is the regional accrediting agency for institutions of higher education in the 19 states that comprise the North Central Region.

Andrews University assumed ownership of Griggs University & International Academy in November 2010. Since then, work has been underway to relocate Griggs operations from Maryland to Michigan, with much of the physical relocation occurring during July 2011. This action formally affirms the establishment of the School of Distance Education at Andrews University.

According to a public disclosure statement from the Higher Learning Commission, Andrews University will evaluate all Griggs programs and merge programs, as appropriate, into the Andrews academic structure. Currently, the Higher Learning Commission’s accreditation extends to and includes only the Griggs programs that Andrews evaluates and integrates into its own academic departments. Griggs University and its programs are nationally accredited by the Distance Education Training Council.

Within six months of the Board approval, a site visit will take place from the Higher Learning Commission to ascertain progress on the merger. A visit from the Higher Learning Commission, previously scheduled for 2012–13, will also further review, among other things, Andrews’ progress in integrating Griggs’ students and programs into Andrews University.

Founded in 1874, Andrews University is the flagship institution of higher education for the Seventh-day Adventist church, located one-half mile east of the U.S. 31 Bypass in Berrien Springs, Mich.
