Learn how to help individuals in American Samoa
On September 29, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake in the South Pacific created a tsunami that slammed into Samoa. Seventy-seven individuals in Western Samoa and 31 in American Samoa lost their lives. Two-hundred were injured and thousands have had their homes or belongings destroyed. Everyone is feeling emotionally or psychologically stressed. Residents of Western Samoa are receiving financial aid, relief supplies and other assistance from Australia and New Zealand. As a United States Territory, American Samoa is relying on help from the United States.
In American Samoa, Seventh-day Adventist church members are suffering greatly. Fifteen families have lost their homes and another 15 lost the contents of the homes. Ten churches have earthquake and water damage. School buildings and staff homes were also affected. There are numerous broken windows, floors, stairs, roofs and concrete walls. Damaged electronic equipment such as copy machines and computers need to be replaced.
The main industry in Samoa is tuna canning. One of the two canneries has permanently closed and the other has been closed since the tsunami hit and may never reopen. This has left many people without any form of income and little hope of rebuilding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is assisting American citizens and nationals, but many people living there will not qualify for aid. Because of the tremendous needs identified and high cost of shipping goods from the United States to American Samoa, Adventist Community Services (ACS) is collecting financial donations to assist with relief and recovery efforts in American Samoa. Please prayerfully consider making a donation to ACS as efforts are made to assist our suffering brothers and sisters.
