Daniel Kuhlman, an eighth-grade student at Collegedale Adventist Middle School (CAMS), competed in the 2016 Tennessee National Geographic State Bee on April 1, 2016. "It was cool to see all of the other kids who had accomplished the same thing and appreciate geography in the same way,” he said. “I enjoyed answering the questions.”
Jeff Richardson, an eighth-grade teacher at CAMS and geography bee judge, said that he is extremely proud of Daniel for qualifying as a state semifinalist.
Earlier in the year, schools throughout the nation held geography bees for students in grades 4-8 to determine each school champion. The winning students of the school geography bees then took an online qualifying test, and the National Geographic Society invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each state to compete in the state finals.
At the state competition in Nashville, a representative from the National Geographic Society told Daniel’s parents, Steven and Lisa Kuhlman, that more than 38,000 students participated in the geography bee in the state of Tennessee. Of the 100 students who made it to the state final, Daniel scored in the top 50 percent of the competitors. This puts him in the top 99.97 percent of all students in the state of Tennessee in geography!

Have you ever wondered how would you fare as a geography bee contestant? At the National Geographic school bees this year, students had to answer questions such as:

Visitors to Biscayne National Park in Florida can go fishing and lobstering along the shore of which kind of habitat — mangrove or desert?
