On this U.S. Veteran's Day we stand in awe and appreciation for all the soldiers who have sacrificed their time, health, and even their lives in defense of our liberty and well-being. Seventh-day Adventists have traditionally recommended a non-combatant stance, which was particularly encouraged during times when the draft was in use in the U.S.

As Adventists, we could not pass by this day without remembering our own Desmond Doss, who was the only conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for non-combat achievements in World War II. Doss, derided by his army peers for his Sabbath keeping and Bible reading habits and shunned for his noncombatant status, would eventually save the lives of 75 of his fellow soldiers, all alone and while unarmed while bullets flew all around him. See the trailer for The Conscientious Objector, a documentary by Terry Benedict.

Oscar and Academy Award-winning film Director Mel Gibson, who has directed several award-winning films including the costly $30 million movie, The Passion of the Christ, which, according to Wikipedia became "the highest grossing R-rated film in United States history, the highest grossing religious film, and the highest grossing non-English-language film of all time," has already begun production on a movie about Doss and his heroism at Hacksaw Ridge in Okinawa at a cost of $50 million.

Pew Research Report: A closer look at Seventh-day Adventists in Americaidentifies us as "A Small and Diverse Faith..." and "among the most racially and ethnically diverse American religious groups," and "extremely devout by traditional measures of religious observance." Their data was drawn from the 2014 Religious Landscape Study, conducted June 14-Sept. 30, 2014.  Read it

When you return home after being gone, what do you hope to find? A warm welcome! Familiar faces, kind words, a handshake or a hug. Should our churches provide any less when we welcome home an inactive member?
Nov. 21 will be the NAD “Welcome Home Sabbath.” It’s a special yearly date chosen to prepare and implement welcoming home our inactive members and visits by people who tend to return especially around the holidays? Think about how your website appears to others, your church building, church signs and grounds. Do you have welcoming signals  – friendly people at the door, help in the parking lot, kind ushers, signs to children's rooms, clean and well-stocked bathrooms and parent's/nursing rooms, an invitation to a potluck meal, and more? Are people assigned to be alert for someone who might be alone who might especially welcome some home cooked hospitality? Start now to be ready See more under "Resources" below.

Dr. Dilip Joseph, author of Kidnapped by the Taliban, will be the featured guest on Let’s Pray on Hope Channel, Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. ET.  As interviewed on CBS, NPR, and CNN, Joseph will share his experience of being captured and rescued, and having hope throughout the process. You can watch Hope Channel on DirecTV #368, Roku, the Hope Channel app, streaming online at hopetv.org, and also on free-to-air-television in several areas (complete list of channels on hopetv.org/local)

“Choosing between education and evangelism is a false dichotomy. We must have both! Evangelism is first generational by its nature, whereas education is the best way to encourage a second and third generation.

What would happen if we also planted schools and grew churches around them? Pennsylvania is doing that in Allentown, with some success.

Reaching Out in Love

Did you know God gives us the power to obey Him?

Salvation is all of grace and not of works, but its fruitage is obedience to the Commandments. This obedience develops Christian character and results in a sense of well-being. It is an evidence of our love for the Lord and our concern for our fellow men. The obedience of faith demonstrates the power of Christ to transform lives, and therefore strengthens Christian witness.  MORE
