5-7-14 ACS a Conduit of Goods for Tornado Survivors

South Central Conference Responds to Disasters in Louisville and Tupelo, Mississippi
It had been 4 years since a tornado hit the State of Mississippi. Yet again, a tornado ripped through the cities of Louisville and Tupelo, Miss. on April 28, 2014. There were 23 counties with at least 1,201 homes destroyed or sustaining major damage, with a total of more than 2,459 homes affected. Preliminary assessments show at least 87 businesses were destroyed or sustained major damage. Total deaths confirmed: 14.

On Friday, May 2, warehouse specialists Jane Hood and Wayne Blanding with their ACS Disaster Response team, arrived in Louisville and Tupelo to help with the coordination of donated goods. Suzette, a local resident of Tupelo affected by the tornado, said “We really appreciates you all coming here and was glad we had come. Everyone treated us very well.”

As many as 300+ volunteers from various organizations and civic groups along with local ACS volunteers have donated their time in the warehouses.

ACS opens  locations in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama

Over the weekend, ACS opened a 288,000 square foot warehouse in Arkansas.  Lavida Whitson, ACS Coordinator for Arkansas Louisiana reported the facility was designed to serve the two towns devastated during last weeks Tornado outbreak.  On Monday they unloaded 42 Semi Trucks of items from across the country to be sorted and distributed.
Lillie Buckingham, ACS Coordinator for South Central (MS/TN area) has reported the warehouse in Tupolo, MS has received cleaning supplies and items for personal hygiene kids.  
Barbara Barnes, ACS Coordinator for South Central (AL) has opened a 14,000 square foot warehouse 
Ray Elsberry, ACS Director for Gulf States has opened a collection and distribution center at the College Drive Adventist Christian School, Pearl, MS.  The children are using the hallways for eating to allow the cafeteria to be used for the collection centers.
