Thousands of people learned how to read and write thanks to the months-long efforts of Hope for Humanity, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and its church member volunteers in El Salvador. More than 2,500 held their literacy completion certificates high overhead during a special celebration held recently in Don Bosco Auditorium in Soyapango, San Salvador, El Salvador.
“Thanks to your help, the government’s partnership and other institutions, we have been able to lower the illiteracy rate from 17 percent to 13 percent earlier in the year,” said Angelica Paniagua, National Literacy Coordinator for the Ministry of Education in El Salvador. This past weekend I went to Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) where I did a Question and Answer session for the faculty and staff, one for the theology faculty and one for the students. I spoke for Friday night vespers, and again for two church services on Sabbath. I had a wonderful time!
"We’re keeping him busy," reported Darcy Force, director of Marketing and Public Relations for SWAU. [Photo: Addressing the faculty and staff in SWAU's Hopps Museum and Welcome Center]

On News Year's Eve the ladies of the St. John's, Newfoundland Seventh-day Adventist Church were having fun and socializing, but not at a New Year's Eve party. They were cooking up a storm for families of seriously ill children at a nearby Ronald McDonald House, which provides housing for families of children being treated at nearby children's hospitals. They provided a meal and desserts for 25 people, as well as snacks and gift bags to be enjoyed at midnight, all at their own expense. They learned that some had been eating out of a vending machine during their stay.  MORE
