Tom Evans was reelected on June 28, 2010, as treasurer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America, at the 59th General Conference Session in Atlanta, Ga. He was first elected to this position June 2007.
Prior to coming to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America, he was the vice president for finance for the Southern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, headquartered in suburban Atlanta. Before being employed at the Southern Union, he held the same position in the Mid-America Union for 12 years.
A native of Portsmouth, Virginia, Tom attended Shenandoah Valley Academy before graduating from Southern Adventist University in 1967. He is a certified public accountant and member of the American Institute of CPAs and also the Iowa Society of CPAs. He received graduate training from Auburn University of Montgomery, Alabama, Iowa State University and Andrews University in Michigan.
Tom has served as treasurer for local conferences and secondary academies. His specialty is reducing debt without inhibiting operations or necessitating employee layoffs.
Tom is a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, having served as a chaplain’s assistant based in Texas and an accounting specialist at the U.S. Army Central Finance and Accounting Office in Heidelberg, Germany. He is married to the former Shirley Chilson. Together they have four adult children and five grandchildren.
