With thousands of people still without power and many driven away from their homes by Hurricane Sandy, the Seventh-day Adventist Church Disaster Response team moved into action to help in the recovery efforts. Sung Kwon, National Director of the Adventist Community Services of the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church visited the Greater New York Conference's (GNYC) disaster response command center in Queens and one of their three warehouse locations in the Bronx before joining the disaster response teams in the field.

Kwon is encouraged to see the way in which Northeastern, New Jersey, Greater New York and Allegheny East Conferences are collectively responding to the needs of the community. He joined the relief efforts by walking the streets of Staten Island, visiting with families and distributing cleaning supplies. "We at ACS are a member of the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (NVOAD), and appreciate partnership with organizations such as Feed the Children, United Methodist Committee on Relief, and other national and local organizations in caring to the needs of those devastated by hurricane Sandy. This is the heart of America! In general, people are kind and compassionate to others, and you can witness God's presence in the midst of this devastating situation."

Kwon also thanked Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA) for their donations and their partnership in providing support and personnel to help in the relief efforts.

On Saturday November 10, more than 500 church members volunteered to provide relief on the battered streets of Staten Island and Far Rockaway. This coming Saturday the Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists will be organizing over 3000 volunteers from the greater New York area and beyond to distribute Personal Care Kit items and cleaning supplies and providing hot meals to victims of Hurricane Sandy.
