8-30-12 Pastor Bikes from Coast to Coast to Raise Awareness for Diapers
Pastor Shadel’s goal is not only to raise awareness for this need, but also to raise $250,000 to purchase 1,000,000 diapers. The diapers will be distributed to organizations across the country in conjunction with the National Diaper Bank Network. During his journey, he has been stopping at churches and other organizations to speak about the need. He and his church recognized the need after a mother, in desperate need of disposable diapers, showed up at his church’s food bank.
The Richland Church currently partners with and distributes disposable diapers through 11 Washington agencies – distributing approximately 90,000 diapers to date. Interested in their service opportunity, two other Adventist churches began corresponding with the leaders of the Richland Church about how to organize diaper banks. Since then, those churches have opened their own diaper banks in Irrigon, Ore., and Sikeston, Mo.
The National Diaper Bank Network has offered to match the cost of each diaper that Shadel raises up to a total of 250,000 diapers, which equals to approximately $62,500.
You can follow his journey through his blog at www.ride4diapers.org.
Pastor Shadle is scheduled to arrive at the Seventh-day Adventist Church World Headquarters at 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, Md., on Wednesday, September 5, at 3:00 p.m.
Adventist Community Services (ACS) of the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists has prepared a welcome reception and workers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church World Headquarters will welcome him as he completes his journey. ACS served as one of the sponsors for Shadel’s awareness ride – funding $20,000 towards his goal.
