6-26-12 San Joaquin Community Hospital Introduces the Da Vinci Si Surgical System to Bakersfield
.

Bakersfield, CA – June 12, 2012 – San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) has purchased Kern County’s first da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System to enhance operating room capabilities beyond the limits of the human hand.

Essentially a robot, the da Vinci is powered by certified surgeons to perform procedures that include prostatectomy, hysterectomy, myomectomy, coronary artery bypass, mitral valve repair and colorectal surgery. The da Vinci includes many advanced features to help procedures be performed quickly and less invasively then traditional surgery. Not only does the da Vinci provide surgeons with a 3D high-definition view of the operative field, it allows for up to 10x magnification to ensure the highest possible precision.

“We believe that the new features of the da Vinci Si System will help us provide the best possible outcomes and is proof of our commitment to provide our community access to the latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery,” said Robert J. Beehler, SJCH president and CEO.

Invented in 1999, the da Vinci system was introduced by Intuitive Surgery. Today, there are more than 2,100 systems installed over 1,700 hospitals worldwide. Other facts include:

More U.S. women now choose da Vinci Surgery for minimally invasive hysterectomy than conventional laparoscopy or vaginal da Vinci Surgery is the #1 surgical treatment option for women facing gynecologic cancer.

Roughly three out of four prostate cancer surgeries in the U.S. are performed using da Vinci; more U.S. men facing prostate cancer choose da Vinci Surgery than any other treatment.

Recent studies show that when comparing surgical removal of the prostate to radiation, surgery (open, minimally invasive and robotic-assisted) had the lower cancer death rate.

93 percent of urology residency programs in the U.S. have a da Vinci System. All 42 gynecologic oncology fellowship programs in the U.S. have a da Vinci System, and more than 40% have the da Vinci Si System with a dual console feature used for training and collaboration.

Based on U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals 2009” ranking, 100 percent of the top ranked hospitals in the United States own at least one da Vinci Surgical System and 100 percent of the top ranked cancer hospitals own at least one da Vinci System.

Founded in 1910, SJCH has been serving Bakersfield and Kern County for more than 100 years. With a full range of services, including a Nationally Certified Stroke Center, Nationally Accredited Chest Pain Center and full-treatment Grossman Burn Center, SJCH is well recognized for providing high-quality, compassionate care to our patients and community.
